William J Hardee John B Hood
William J Hardee was an experienced, respected corps commander. A former commandant of cadets at Westpoint,he was the author of a tactics manual used by both sides. John B Hood, known as a "fighter", was named by Jefferson Davies to succeed Johnston as commander of the army of Tennessee. He promptly launched that army on a series of futile attacks.
Joseph Wheeler Stephen D Lee
Joseph Wheeler, the commander of Confederate cavalry in the Atlanta Campaign, frustrated Federal cavalry attempts to choke off supply lines to the city. Stephen D Lee succeeded Hood as a corps commander.
Leonidas Polk Patrick R Cleburne
Leonidas Polk, an Episcopal bishop, was killed at Pine Mountain. Patrick R Cleburne commanded a division in Hardee's corps.
William B Bate William Wing Loring
William B Bate - His division struck the Federal left at Atlanta. William Wing Loring was a division commander in Stewart's corps.
A P Stewart Carter L Stevenson
A P Stewart succeeded Polk as corps commander. Carter L Stevenson was a division commander in S D Lee's corps.
W H T Walker B F Cheatam
W H T Walker was killed leading his division at Terry's Millpond. B F Cheatham, a division commander, briefly led Hood's corps.
